Shelter and Housing Services
Shelter and Housing Services provides support to families and individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness or who have previously been homeless. Our network of drop-in centers and housing options provides a range of services that promote and assist peoples’ efforts to achieve stable and self-supporting lives.
Our family shelter, the Greenfield Family Inn, provides temporary room and board, assistance in finding permanent housing, and a variety of other support services including a new Rapid ReHousing program, through which we hope to minimize each family’s crisis by facilitating their move back into stable housing as soon as possible. The Franklin County Emergency Shelter and Grove Street Inn provide emergency overnight shelter for adults. The Interfaith Shelter provides overnight shelter for adults during the six coldest months of the year. The Interfaith Shelter operates in partnership with the City of Northampton and the Friends of Hampshire County Homeless Individuals. The Friends recently arranged for overflow winter space in Easthampton, with 4-6 beds, operated in partnership with Soldier On.
Transitional and long-term housing is provided in a variety of ways: Congregate housing provides supported housing situations for individuals while they regain self-sufficiency and stability; community-based shared and scattered apartments provide long-term or permanent homes where individuals can continue their journey towards living the life they hope to have; rooming houses provide affordable housing for individuals; and Yvonne’s House provides permanent housing to individuals through a modified Housing First program.
Drop-in centers in Northampton and Greenfield are the hubs of ServiceNet’s programs. Through the Drop Ins, individuals can access housing advocates, benefit specialists, case managers, health care providers and other professionals and
advocates; they can grab a bag lunch or get a cup of coffee; or they can access computers and phones to help in job and housing searches.
Other services include the VOCA (Victims of Crime Assistance) program, which offers free counseling, advocacy, and support for crime victims; a street outreach program in partnership with Community Action; and a housing re-entry program in partnership with the Hampshire County House of Correction.
Funding comes from local, state, and federal governments; the Franklin County and Hampshire Community United Ways; and private donations and grants.
